heating degree-dayA form of degree-day used as an indication of fuel consumption; in U.S. usage, one heating degree-day is given for each degree that the daily mean temperature departs below the base of 65°F (where degrees Celsius are used, the base is usually 19°C). In accumulating degree-days over a “heating season,” days on which the mean temperature exceeds 65°F are ignored. See cooling degree-day.
